When I was about 4 or 5 years old, my uncle died so I went downstairs to my aunt’s flat to offer some words of consolation: “Auntie, when I die I want to be buried in Texas, because when they dig my grave, they will strike oil and I will be the richest angel in heaven.”
And now this Connecticut Yankee is living in Texas, but I have yet to strike oil. Living and serving in Texas was never on my radar, but looking back, I can now see the places, moments, and people who played a part in my journey to Houston. God’s providence can be subtle at times, but it’s still very powerful. Often what I thought as non-consequential moments in my life have proven to be part of a greater plan in forming me as a person.
At Thanksgiving we gather in homes and we give thanks for family and friends and God’s bounty. However, I would like to invite you to reflect on your own life’s journey. Who are the people that had an impact on your life? What places and moments may have moved and touched you? Marvel at the past surprises, lessons, adventures, and people whom you have encountered, for in all of this is God’s providential love!. Give thanks and enjoy God’s presence in your life, and celebrate it with family and friends at your Thanksgiving table.
We Basilians are grateful for all of you who share in our ministry at St. Thomas High School. Please be assured of our continued prayers and we wish you all a very happy and blessed Thanksgiving.
